This is old shelf needed a little TLC. I wanted to add it to my craft room, so I decided to paint it white.

I used a medium grit sandpaper. By hand I sanded the shelf.

You can see how bad of shape it is in!

I had had to patch a place on the bottom of the shelf that was chipped.  I used Elmer’s Wood Filler. You can find it at Lowe’s. Once dried, I sanded that area.

Next, I wiped the shelf with a dry cloth.

Using a small roller and an angled brush, I applied this Zinnser Primer. It looks as if it will takes lots of paint to cover. No worries! A couple of coats of paint will make it look beautiful.

I did have an issue with the varnish bleeding through on the backboard. I had decided that I would cover it with shelf paper that I used on a different shelf.

I used this Sherwin Williams Interior White Satin to give the shelf two coats. I allowed a 12 hour dry time between coats.

Here is the finished product with the shelf paper applied to the backboard.

Here are the two shelves side by side.  I am very happy with the outcome.
