Smash books can be made in any form or fashion. For this particular one, I made it before we traveled.
The cover is made from an upcycled gallon-sized Ziplock box! I Googled how to DIY book binding.
I used twine to bind the book. You can see here is this pic.
This picture is of the inside cover. You can see where I covered the book. There is a pocket on the inside cover to tuck away papers or in my case, a disc with pictures.
Some ideas of what to include in your book are: maps, stickers, quotes…
Journal cards, pictures, cut outs from documentation. You can tab each day for easy reference. I used tags, but you can use your imagination.
You can include little pockets to keep little memorabilia tucked away.
Washi tape adds beautiful color. As you travel collect reminders of your trip such as napkins, key cards, tickets….
packaging from souvenirs, patches, receipts…
bingo cards, word search puzzles (mine related to the trip,)…
…cigar labels, wine labels….
….you can even use themed paint strips from the hardware store! I think you are getting the picture! You can use anything you can fit into your book! That is why I LOVE to smash book. It is like a scavenger hunt to fill the pages. You can be as creative as you like.
You can include a “picture of the day.”
Here are Juan and I in The Bahamas.
And here we are in Key West.
You can use postcards to journal.
You can use lined paper, or graph paper as I have, to journal.
Whatever you decide to do make it fun! Of course you don’t have to make your book ahead of time. You can gather your memorabilia as you go and make it when you get home. I’ve done them both ways!
You can finish your book off with a book band to hold it all together. I added a keychain so when the book sits on the shelf, the keychain dangles.
Have fun making your smash book. I would love to see your finished product. Shoot me an email. Also, feel free to leave a comment if you have questions!
