Ipsy Glam Bag March 2017

Ipsy Glam Bag March 2017

Spring has sprung here in Florida!  I am so excited to bring to you a Spring-inspired collection of sample makeup products.  Ipsy Glam Bag March 2017 includes a card that says, “You are Beautiful.”  It encourages to pass it on.  We are to share the card with someone who could use a little love.

Ipsy Glam Bag March 2017

The cosmetic bag is a beautiful blush with a rose gold zipper and pull.  Definitely dressy enough to carry as a date-night bag.

City Color Photo Chic Dark Spot Corrector – a peach colored concealer used to minimize the appearance of dark circles and spots.  The thick formula is long lasting and gives eyes a healthy rested appearance.  Tip:  use your finger to “melt” the product to under eye.  Top with your favorite concealer. $3.99 on website.

Elizabeth Mott Blending Brush – this is a dense, yet soft brush that does a fantastic job blending eye shadow.  The handle is a tiffany blue and rose gold.  $15 on website.

The Balm Bahama Mama Bronzer – Bahama Mama is a beautiful brown matte bronzer that does not have any orange undertones.  The product can be used to contour or as a brown eye shadow.  $15 on Walmart website.

Doucce Freematic Eye Shadow  – an individual shadow is sold as part of a quad.  The product is in the color Marisa No. 67.  It is a shimmer rose color shadow.  It feels velvety soft to the touch.  It has a slight sparkle to it.  $35 for the quad on the website.  You can choose from 82 colors both matte and shimmer.

Ladykin Affinitic Snail Cream – first thought: what a cute container.  Second thought: snail secretion! Ew!  However….even Ipsy tells us not to get grossed out.  There is no scent to the moisturizer.  This is a Korean brand that helps heal damaged skin, boost elasticity and leaves your skin smooth and hydrated.  My skin feels very soft and smooth after one application.  Also, the product is on back order until 3/30/17!  That in itself says something.  It is $22 on website.

Review of Wow Airlines

Review of Wow Airlines

Wow Airlines on Runway in Boston, MA

Juan, some friends and I recently traveled to Iceland out of Boston on Wow Airlines.  This was a new airline to me!  The airline was founded in 2011.  It is headquartered in Reykjavik, Iceland.  It’s operating base is Keflavik International Airport in Reykjavik.  At this time it only has 12 planes in its fleet!  Wow Airlines flies to 29 destinations in Europe, the US and Canada.  Link to their website here.

We were able to book a round trip to Reykjavik, Iceland out of Boston, MA for $179 per person.  We flew late January and early February 2017. You pay $10 per seat extra.  A medium-sized (27 in x 18 in x 11 in) with a weight limit of 44 pounds cost us $51.  Please visit Wow website here to read about the fees and charges.  We had to read and reread to comply.

I have a whole blog post: What This Florida Girl Packed for Iceland in the Winter specifically on what we packed to meet the weight guidelines.

I was surprised to find that the planes are painted a bright fushia!  The flight attendants wear pretty, fushia uniforms (including hats!) that rival those of Pan AM.  The crew was very professional and courteous.  I had the seat next to a flight attendant.  I was able to chat during take-off.  She gave me some valuable information on the people of Reykjavik.  She used to work at the Blue Lagoon.  I got some insider tips!

Checking in at the airport in Boston was easy.  Not many people were flying to Reykjavik.  Only a few people in security, so we breezed through! The airline was only a third full.

Wow Airlines Whole Row of Seats

That meant each of the four of us had a whole row of seats for the 5 hour and 10 minute flight!!!  We were on a 6 PM flight.  There is a 5 hour time difference

Wow Airlines Interior Facing Back

The interior of the planes are clean.  Of course legroom is an upgrade in price, but we were able to spread out.

Wow Airlines Interior Front

The seats have the paper protectors.  There are charging stations for electronics.  I was able to use my plug without the converter.  It is not a USB plug.

Wow Call Station

I was so amused at their slogans for services.  Here are the call buttons for the flight attendants.  “Honk if you’re hungry!”

Wow Airlines Call Buttons

Another said, “Ring my bell!”

Wow Airlines Barf Bag

The barf bag was my favorite!  It has a Vomit-meter that include: “Icelandic pronunciation”, “Our competitor’s prices” and “the pilot’s jokes” are just a few.

Wow Airline Cup

The plastic cups say, ” Sip it…sip it good.”  So much fun!

Wow Airlines Duty Free Shopping

The duty-free shopping catalog wants to Wow Me!

We arrived in Reykjavik at 4 AM–35 minutes ahead of schedule.  At that time of the morning we were able to go through customs and claim our luggage quickly.

Wow Airlines Check-in Reykjavik

The return check-in process in Reykjavik was very smooth.  We were able to print our own luggage tag from a kiosk.

Self Check Wow Airlines

Next, you place your luggage on the conveyor belt that weighs it and sends it to be loaded on the plane.  Here is Juan saying goodby to our luggage!

Wow Airlines Flight to Boston

Because of an international flight, we were early for our flight.  We were hoping to upgrade to seats with more room.  As it turned out, the flight was not full!  We loaded in a bus and were driven to the plane.  We loaded from the tarmac.

Emergency Row Wow Airlines

Here we are (toasty warm wool socks!) in the emergency row–Seats 24 D and E!  Lots of legroom!  We could have changed seats, but chose to stay put.

This was a day flight.  We left Reykjavik at 340 PM and arrived in Boston at 435 PM.  We loaded movies on our iPad–free entertainment.  Juan’s drinks were $7 each.  We ate before our flight, but brought snacks so as not to have to buy any on the plane.  I was hoping for coffee before we landed, but it was a quick-service of soft drinks or water.

Overall, we LOVED out experience with Wow Airlines!!!

What This Florida Girl Packed for Iceland in Winter

What This Florida Girl Packed for Iceland in Winter

Packing List for Winter in Iceland

Here is a free printable:

Packing List for Winter in Iceland

Thinking about traveling to Iceland in the wintertime?!   Juan, some friends and I just returned from an awesome adventure Jan. 31st-Feb. 3rd.  You might be surprised to hear that it wasn’t as cold as we expected!!  It was colder in our other destinations–Boston and New York than it was in Iceland.  Don’t get me wrong, it was cold, but we were prepared for the weather.

What This Florida Girl Packed for Iceland in Winter

Airlines have made it affordable to travel to this beautiful country.  We flew Wow Airlines.  I had never heard of this airline.

Wow Airlines

Our flight was out of Boston.  It was $179 per person round trip!  You can read my Review of Wow Airlines.  What is important is that the airline is very strict on their luggage policy.  You pay $51 for one checked luggage—and it has to weigh 44 lbs. or less!

That is why I am writing this post.  I am here to tell you that you can do it too!

We did go to Ross and buy a new piece of luggage for this trip.  It is by a British company called IT.  We paid $69.99 for a 27x18x11 (in inches) suitcase.  And it is purple!  So easy to identify.  I would call this a medium-size piece.

It Luggage

It Luggage wtht Lock

I like to lock our luggage so we don’t have any mishaps along the way.  The lock is TSA approved, so if they need to open the suitcase they have a master key.

It Luggage Wheels

Another helpful piece of advice is to find luggage with eight wheels.  This suitcase never fell over.  Never had a problem rolling anywhere!  It was a dream!

Okay!  Now for what went inside this suitcase!

First Layer, PJs and Underwear

We will start with my packing list.  I chose colors that I could mix and match–black, gray and purple.

1 set of pjs
9 underwear
1 bra
1 first layer top
1 first layer bottom

Outer Layers

5 Tops

Women's Leggings

1 pair velour leggings
1 pair fleece-lined leggings
1 pair corduroy leggings

Skirt and Fleece-Lined Tightss

1 skirt
1 fleece-lined tights

This was my just-in-case or luxury item, if you will!  I did not wear the skirt in Iceland.  I did wear the tights under leggings.  We went to New York on the return.  I did wear the skirt there.

Snow Boots and Wool Socks

1 pair Columbia snow boots (loved these!  I could just slip them on and off.  So helpful traveling through airports.)  Order here.
4 pair wool socks

Women's Magellan Rain Pants

1 pair Women’s Magellan rain pants (I wore these to the waterfalls and on sleeting or snowy days!  Just layer over pants or leggings.)

Blanket Scarf and Neck Gaiter

1 blanket scarf (doubled as a blanket on the plane)
1 wool neck gaiter  (best piece of clothing I brought!  I was able to pull this over my mouth and nose in the frigid temperatures)

Hats and Gloves

2 hats
1 pair snow gloves ( I did not wear these.)
1 pair finger-less gloves (I wore these all the time so I could use my camera or iPhone.)
1 pair leather gloves

Swimsuit and Sandals

1 swimsuit  (Yes!…a swimsuit for Iceland!  We went to the Blue Lagoon, a geothermal heated spa.)
1 pair of sandals

Women's Down Puffy Coat

1 women’s down puffy coat

My husband’s packing list:

Men's First Layers and Underwear

1 first layer top
1 first layer bottom (Juan wore one time!)

Men's Waterproof Fleece-Lined Jacket

1 fleece-lined waterproof jacket

A few extras were packed:

Hot Hands-Feet, Extension Cord, Travel Curling Iron and Laundry Bag

1 pack hand warmers (did not use)
1 pack toe warmers (did not use)
1 travel flat iron
1 extension cord (for cpap machine if needed)
1 laundry bag

Cpap Machine

1 cpap machine

1 backpack (for our excursions)

Carry Cases for The Blue Lagoon and Waterproof iPhone Case

1 waterproof iPhone case
2 carry cases for The Blue Lagoon–packed with swimsuit, sandals, waterproof iPhone case, toiletries and coverups for when we stopped at The Blue Lagoon on our way to our hotel.

That is everything I packed into our suitcase.  Remember our weight limit was 44 pounds.  All of this weighed 38 pounds.  It was nice to have a little wiggle room!

Another packing tip:  Use 2 gallon ziplock bags to pack.  Once filled, I sat on them to get the air out.  It allowed me to pack more tightly.

That is What This Florida Girl Packed for Iceland in Winter!

I will have a series of posts relating to our Iceland trip.  Stay tuned for new posts.

Have you been to Iceland?  What did you pack for your trip?

I would love to hear about your trip.

Meet My Kitties

I have been blogging for a little over a year now.  I mentioned in my profile that I would introduce you to our kitties.  We are now empty-nesters, so they are our fur babies in every sense of the word.

So….meet my kitties!  We have five!

This is Lilly–our oldest and only female!  Lilly turned 12 last year.  At the time we only had one other kitty.  Juan wanted him to have a companion.  He visited PetSmart where Lilly was in what he called “a double-wide” cage.  She reached out to him.  He sat with her and they became instant buddies.  Lilly is a tiny short-hair tabby with beautiful green eyes.  She keeps our four male kitties in line.

Lilly’s buddy is Gino.  They are best pals.  It is a good thing because Gino is so timid.

Gino and Lilly Christmas 2016

Gino and Lilly Christmas 2016

Gino was adopted from Cat’s Angels here in Jacksonville.  He and his foster brother, Riley, were at Petsmart.  Juan, Andrew and Kristen fell in love with Riley (who has since passed) and I fell in love with Gino.  Gino was timid and shying in the corner of his cage.  I had to have him!  While I was working at a local spay-neuter clinic, I found out how Gino came by his name.  He was rescued from Cedar Key, FL.  His rescuers, Cat’s Angels, ordered a pizza in their hotel room.  Gino jumped on the bed and stole a slice of pizza!  I can’t imagine.  He is so shy and skittish of men.  He loves children.  Gino is a tuxedo cat, also with big green eyes.

Gino is 9 years old.

Diego is our big, black medium-hair kitty with big gold eyes.  Diego stole my heart when I was working at First Coast No More Homeless Pets, the spay-neuter clinic.

Diego in Our Yard

Diego in Our Yard

Diego slept on my desk at work.  He would follow me to the break room for my coffee break.  He even would jump into my arms.  His story is a sad but true one.  Someone left him on a shelf in PetSmart.  They found him as they were stocking the shelves.  He was brought to our clinic where our Program Director pulled him for adoption.  Diego is a mess.  He loves to eat coffee grinds….yes coffee grinds!!  He wakes me up in the morning for a bowl of milk.  He nibbles my fingers, bats things around, annoys until I get up!  Although an indoor cat, Diego loves to be outside.  We have to keep a close eye on him!

Diego is 8 years old.

Pierre also stole my heart at the clinic.  I guess you could say that I liked to bring my work home with me!!

Pierre is a rascal.  He loves food.  We have a program in Jacksonville called Feral Freedom.  Pierre lived in a feral colony.  The feral cats are trapped, spayed or neutered and released back into the colony.  Their left ear is tipped to identify the spayed or neutered cats.  Before we were a no-kill city, there was a three strike rule.  If the cat was trapped three times, it was put down.  Like I said Pierre loves food.  Food is placed in the trap to catch the cat.  Well, Pierre just wanted the food!!  On his third round, our Program Director pulled him for adoption and saved him from being euthanized!  He became an office kitty.  I saw him and had to bring him home.

I mean look at that face!!  He has such unique markings.  We called him Beetlejuice at first!  Pierre is tiny and all fur.  He goes crazy over ham.  He is very loving but will fly at the sound of a noise.  Pierre is 7 years old.

Finally….we have a GRAND kitty.  Yep, Herbert (what a name) came to us by way of Micanopy, FL.  Our daughter, Kristen, went to school in Gainesville (Go Gators!!).  She adopted Herbert from a family while there.  Herbert came to visit on a Christmas break and never went back!

Juan is absolutely smitten with this cat!!  He shows so much favoritism for this GRAND!!  Herbert is a unique cat…more like a dog.  He is very playful.  He runs NASCAR around the house making a noise as he goes.  He loves to snuggle.  He is my pillow pet.  He sleeps wrapped around my head.

Herbert with Towel

Herbert with Towel

Herbert has a unique habit for a cat.  He likes to drag around items.  It started with our son’s flip flops.  Yep, size 10s slapping down the stairs.  He pulls towels down off the rack and drags them up to our bed.  He drags cat beds, beach towels, blankets or socks.  Whatever he can find to bring to us as gifts.  Herbert is a fluffy black with white paws and belly.  Herbert is 5 years old.

I hope you enjoyed spending a little time with our fur babies!

See you in my next blog post!

Happy New Year 2017!

Got Lemons? Make Lemoncello!

Got Lemons? Make Lemoncello!

Got Lemons? Make Lemoncello!

One of my favorite places to visit is Sorrento, Italy.  While there we tasted the most delicious lemony liqueur called lemoncello.  I was determined to learn how to make it!

This is my second year of bottling this yummy liqueur.  Our lemon tree produced an over abundance of lemons, which I picked in November.  We live in Florida, so the sunshine and rain treats our tree with the care it needs.

Fresh Lemons and Grain Alcohol

Wash your lemons.  Using a vegetable peeler, peel the lemon skins into strips.  Should the white pith come with it, use a knife to remove the pith.

Lemon Peel Strips

Place the strips into a 2-quart pitcher or jar.  Add 750-ml of grain alcohol.  Cover with lid or plastic wrap and place in cool dark place.  I steep the peels for about 4 weeks.

2 Quart Jar of Lemon Peels and Grain Alcohol

The alcohol will take on the color and flavor of the lemon strips.

Grain Alcohol Taking Lemon Color

After about 4 weeks of stirring the peels and alcohol it is time to add the simple syrup.

In a medium sauce pan, mix together 3 1/2 cups of water and 2 1/2 cups of sugar.  Stir over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved, about 5 minutes.  Cool completely.  Pour the sugar syrup over the grain alcohol mixture.  Cover and let stand at room temperature overnight.

Strain the lemoncello through a mesh strainer.  Discard the peels.  Pour the lemoncello into bottles.  Seal the bottles.  Store in the freezer.

Makes about 7 cups.

This is a liqueur and is to be sipped and enjoyed–especially on a hot summer day!
